This is called checks and balances. Each branch can check the other two branches in unique ways. This way they can make sure each branch is within their boundaries.

The answer is Limited Government. Since the US government is ran on limited powers to its authorities, each branch goes through the "checks and balances" procedure in regards to the others. This way, if one branch checks on another, they can call them out for over using their power.
