King Manuel of Portugal sent him on the expedition to India and on his way there he found Brazil. He claimed it for Portugal naming it the "Island of the True Cross". The king renamed it Holy Cross. Later it was renamed to Brazil for Dyewood trees that lived there called Pau- Brasil. Cabral then stayed in Brazil for 10 days, he then continued on to India.
