However power corrupts, and Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Without a way to keep this person down, most people of the state do not understand what they may have given a rise to. The whole question why do people choose is wrong in itself because people can't choose the dictator. They are dictators and have absolute authority in most cases. Dictators like Hitler, Stalin or Mao may have been appealing to the populist people due to their radical beliefs and hatred. These dictators also are really good orators and could speak and influence a herd-like mentality.
