After the discovery of America, the Columbian Exchange began. This was a system of exchange of goods, people and ideas that took place between Europe and the New World. One of the advantages that such an exchange brought was the adoption of new food crops in Europe. Foods such as potatoes, tomatoes, chocolate, vanilla, sugar cane, maize, peppers, beans and peanuts arrived to Europe, and the adoption of these new crops led to an important growth in human population.
