I'd say that his message through this quote would be that writers tend to want "absolute freedom" and when you become a writer and make it successful in life then you wouldn't have as much freedom as you'd like due to interviews and fame and fans etc.

Absolute Freedom is a goal worth achieving, but if you need money to support yourself, writing is not the way to do it. And you are foolish to try.
