The National Assembly was a revolutionary assembly formed out of members of the Third Estate who demanded greater political voice. The National Assembly met in the summer of 1789 with the purpose of developing a new constitution. After they were barred by the king from entering their usual meeting place, they met on tennis court and took the ''Tennis Court Oath'' in which they pledged not to disband until a new constitution had been developed. This decision led directly to the French Revolution as we know it.
