After the Civil War, The Emancipation Proclamation of 1963 gave liberty to African Americans in the Southern states. African Americans found some difficulties during the Reconstruction period because they were not used to be free and make decisions on their own. On the other hand, white people was not used to see African Americans as equal citizens.
Congress implemented The Reconstruction period from 1866 to 1877 with the aim of integrating the Southern states into the Union and to help African Americans to integrate into society. The problem was that the Southern states perceived the Reconstruction as an imposition and never accepted it at all. The good things for African Americans were that they could attend school, get an education, and get more decent jobs. With the Civil Right Act of 1866, African Americans got the right to vote.
