Essay describes the experience of the English narrator, possibly Orwell himself, called upon to shoot an aggressive elephant while working as a police officer in Burma. Because the locals expect him to do the job, he does so against his better judgment, his anguish increased by the elephant's slow and painful death. The story is regarded as a metaphor for British imperialism, and for Orwell's view that "when the white man turns tyrant it is his own freedom that he destroys."[2]

Ponyboy was at the scene of the murder and helped Johnny flee. in the chapter while looking at Bob's picture in the yearbook he states, "I could begin to see the person we had killed.",which goes back to his current mental state. In his current mental state he is assuming the responsibility of Bob's death and is in denial of Johnny having died also, so as a methods of dealing with both of these deaths he denies Johnny had killed Bob and assumes responsibility for it.
