They were symbols of the highest ranking.Certain colored feathers were attributed more value than others. Since red was associated with gods and chiefs, red feathers were reserved for religious objects and garments worn by high-ranking members of society. In Hawaii, where the red-feathered i’iwi and apapane birds are small but plentiful, feathered capes made for the elite actually came to be known as ‘ahu ‘ula, meaning “red garment.” The name did not change even after Hawaiian artists began including yellow feathers alongside the red. Rarer than red feathers in Hawaii, the golden feathers of the ‘o’o and mamowere highly prized.

Cross-Hatching in art gives the illusion of texture because it is a structure of lines that give a rough feel. It gives value because as you work out, the darkest shaded area is the area with the most crossing lines.

(2) Illusion of texture with paint
Impasto is where paint is thickly laid on a canvas with a artist-knife and it is built up to give texture and the paint also comes off the canvas.

Explain why the artwork pictured here is an example of mixed media art.
Anna [14]

Answer: Mixed media art involves mixing different creative mediums to create work that incorporates two or more art forms. For example, you can add sculpture to your painting, or draw on top of photography prints. Mixed media is all about breaking the boundaries between different art forms. Artists need to look at everything as a potential canvas.
