In Ghana, the most common marriage system is the so-called "customary marriage", or one based on customs.

This type of marriage involves the groom's family paying a price for the bride's family. Customary marriage is practiced in much of Africa, as well as in Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and among the Guajiro Indians of northeast Colombia and northwest Venezuela, to name just a few examples.

In biblical times it was also customary to pay a bride price. It was understood then, and is still understood in this way, that the bride price is compensation given to the young woman's parents for the loss of their services and for the time, energy and resources invested in her education and maintenance up to the wedding moment.
