Archy [21]

There are two prepositional phrases acting as adverbs in the given sentence: in a fresh-water lake and in a chlorinated pool.

Explanation:

A prepositional phrase is a group of words consisting of a preposition, its object, and words modifying the object. Most commonly, they modify nouns and verbs and can function as adjectives, adverbs, or nouns. Prepositional phrases that function as adverbs are called adverb prepositional phrases.

In the sentence Joe and Hannah, the twins next door to me, prefer to swim in a fresh-water lake rather than in a chlorinated pool we can see two adverb prepositional phrases: in a fresh-water lake and in a chlorinated pool. They modify the verb to swim. Like adverbs that modify verbs, adverb prepositional phrases can give us information about where, when, why, how, and to what extent the action described by the verb takes place. In this case, we receive information about the location (to swim in a fresh-water lake and to swim in a chlorinated pool).
