The reason for the raised tensions was that this move was directly, negatively impacting the American colonists, as the tax was lowering their profit, which was not seen fondly at all.

The Boston Massacre, where five colonists were killed by the British soldiers, was also a big reason for the raising of the tensions and dislike between Britain and the American colonists. No one wants their own people murdered, especially not on their own territory, so the people started to despise the British, and eventually they overthrown their governing later on in the history.
