Modern English words can derive from many different sources. Many have roots that are Latin or Greek.
The word diabolos is from the Greek word meaning "devil". In Latin it is commonly spelled as diabolus or diabulus. The Anglo-Saxon word deofol has the same meaning. The modern English word is devil.
Presbyter is late Latin and borrowed from the Greek word 'presbyteros'. The Anglo-Saxon word preost as the same meaning. In modern English, we use the word priest.
In Latin, the word ministrare is a conjucation of the word for minister. The Anglo-Saxon word mynster has a different spelling than the modern English word with the same meaning. The modern English word is "minister".
The verb praedicare in Latin means "to preach". The word praedician doesn't seem to exist in Anglo-Saxon dictionaries (mine included). I would determine that the modern English word would either be the verb "preach" (as the Latin one is) or the noun "preacher".
This exercise was slightly misleading with its information, but I hope you enjoy learning the history of the English language!
Answer:
Empathy
Explanation:
The story, "The Wretched and the Beautiful", by E. Lily Yu, tells the story of an alien ship carrying refugees of war from the extraterrestrial space to a beach resort where humans went to for relaxation. The aliens in the ship were ugly, hungry, and sick looking having suffered the effects of war. Humans in the beach were not happy to see them as they felt that they were a burden and should be helped by the government. They found it difficult sympathizing with them. However, when a different set of aliens who looked better, came to capture the former aliens, humans were more receptive to them.
The theme of a story is the underlying message a story is trying to pass. The writer highlighted the difficulty humans had in sympathizing with and showing empathy to the condition of victims of unfavorable circumstances. Humans deferred this responsibility to others rather than taking it on themselves. In the end those who showed a lack of empathy were rewarded for not being kind.
Answer:
» the time and place of the action in a story
Explanation:
Setting, in literature, the location and time frame in which the action of a narrative takes place
Answer:
A.) to endear certain characters to us.
D.) to show characters’ educational levels.
Stowe's use of dialogue enriches the setting of the story in various ways. First of all, it makes the characters more realistic and endears certain characters to us. By representing their speech as it most likely sounded in real life, we feel like we get to know the characters better. This makes us care about them more deeply. Stowe also uses dialect in order to show the educational levels of the characters, as "standard" English is most likely to be used by characters who are literate and have received some education.
