How were territorial expansion and the issue of slavery related in the united states?

History

Every time we added land the issue about if and when the area became a state was important. There was a balance in Washington and Congress between slave holding states and non-slave holding states (free states). The lawmakers from the free states were trying to eliminate slavery but couldn't manage to, so they instead tried to contain it. The Missouri Compromise contained it to any area south of the 36  30 parallel. Later they will attempt to keep it out of any lands won from the Mexican War with the Wilmot Proviso. These will all be over turned later with the Kansas-Nebraska Act that will state that the people living in the area should decide the matter themselves. This meant all open territory could be slave holding states. This would greatly increase their power and influence on politics in Washington.

Which description best fits the early settlers in Jamestown? factory workers with no outdoor experience men and women who wanted
Sunny_sXe [5.5K]

The correct answer is - military man prepared to survive in the wilderness.

Even though the first settlers of Jamestown were young and middle aged man that had military experience, and they were considered as tough man that would be able to survive in the wilderness, it didn't turned out as planned. The first settlers were totally clueless about their environment, they were catching lots of diseases and lots of them died because of that. They were not very efficient in the agricultural field, so they starved very often, and for some time relied on the natives for food. All in all, they were in terrible state, and Jamestown was on the verge of collapse for most of the time.

If you were to travel to a new location, you would need to find information
Papessa [141]

Depends, if it’s let’s say Brazil you would want to see review about it or a trusted site. I don’t recommend that it’s a site where anyone can edit the answer since there can be multiple “opinions” rather than actual cold hard facts.
