Beets and Cane
About 80 percent of the sugar supply came from sugar cane as it is usually grown in the tropical countries of Southeast Asia while the 20 percent came from sugar beets, a biennial plant cultivated in temperate countries.
The inner wall of the esophagus is lined with stratified squamous epithelium. It shows up as large purple on your slide. Notice that the cells at the base of this epithelial layer are cuboidal. This is the region where mitosis occurs.
