It was German monk, Martin Luther, who noticed that the only reason that the Bible was never translated out of Latin, was because that only the most elite members of medieval society understood Latin, meaning that the Pope could make up rules and claim that they were from the Bible when they really weren't. Such as claiming that selling indulgences would get the seller a higher chance of going to heaven when in reality the Bible forbids exploitation of religion and it was only done to make money. Martin Luter was a devout Christian and decided that this was wrong and translated the Bible to German himself, weakening the church
