It is breaking this rule: "<span>Use a comma to separate coordinate adjectives." There should be a comma between "new" and "very" because these are both adjectives. </span>

Thus, in these excerpts, Utterson begins to consider illogical possibilities as the events are too strange and he is trying to understand them.
