What part of the sentence is the subordinate clause

English
1 answer:
natali 33 [55]3 years ago
4 0

Answer:

"until the boss told him to go home"

Explanation:

<u>Eric worked</u> <em>until the boss told him to go home.</em>

Also referred to as a dependent clause, a subordinate clause is one which complements a sentence's main clause.  I've underlined the main clause and italicized the subordinate clause.  You can see that "Eric worked" could stand alone as a sentence, but "until the boss told him to go home" could not.

Write a letter to your friend describing about your village?<br><br>
ANTONII [103]

<em>Hi there my friend! A happy and prosperous new year to you and your family. I hope my letter comes to you in great timing and shape. I wrote to you to give you an idea about the village where I live. Who knows? Maybe one day you would want to visit here. </em>

<em> </em>

<em>The weather here is tropical. We only have two seasons: rainy days and summer days. Since it is January now, the weather is transitioning from cold to warm. Summer days will start on March. Aside from the weather, the village I lived in is busy as it is located in the city. The roads going to our home is always jam packed with different types of cars and vehicles. You can expect heavy traffic all the time. But then, all progressive cities have that don't they? In spite of heavy traffic, our village has numbers of malls. You can walk for about 5 to 10 minutes from our home, and you can reach a mall called SM. It has almost everything. Groceries, hardware, food courts and famous food stores. Across SM is another mall called Vista Mall which has cinemas and massage shops. There are also small hospitals nearby but to be able to go there, you can book a cab via Uber or Grab because it is no walking distance. </em>

<em> </em>

<em>Beside SM, we have marketplace. If you are interested in preparing your own meals, you can shop there for fresh goods. We also have 7 eleven shops and sports bar nearby.  </em>

<em> </em>

<em>Our village is composed of houses which are bungalow styles. It is made up of concrete and wood materials. People there are friendly and they almost knew each other. Everybody will greet you with huge smile on their faces every morning. They are also helpful in times of calamities and problems. When it comes to security, our village gate is guarded with armed security guards who never leave their post to monitor every one coming in and out of the village. There are also CCTV cameras on the streets to ensure the safety of all people living there. </em>

<em> </em>

<em>I hope I have described my village to you. In your next letter, can you describe me yours? </em>

<em> </em>

<em>I am looking forward to hear from you.  </em>

<em> </em>

<em>Best regards, </em>

<em>HENRY</em>

1) What is wrong with the following rule of English syntactic structure?
Mkey [24]

1) What is wrong with the following rule of English syntactic structure?

Answer:  The correct version of this rule is: "A prepositional phrase is formed with a preposition followed by <u>a noun/noun phrase/pronoun.</u>"

Explanation:

<u>Prepositional phrase</u> normally consists of a preposition which is followed either by a noun, pronoun or a noun phrase. If we state in the definition that a preposition is followed by a noun only, it will not encompass all of the cases and will lead to certain ungrammatical structures, such as "with girl". In this particular case, we need to add an article before the noun, and thus create a noun phrase "a girl."

2) Do phrase structure rules represent deep structure or surface structure?

Answer: Deep structure.

Explanation:

The two terms, deep structure and surface structure, were proposed by Noam Chomsky, a linguist and a cognitive scientist. Chomsky argued that deep structures are generated by phrase-structure rules, while surface structures are constructed from deep structures when they undergo certain transformations. As he defined it, <u>deep structure</u> represents concepts, thoughts and ideas, while the language that we use to describe the deep structure is called <u>surface structure</u>. Deep structure is a necessary condition for the application of transformation rules.

3) Which of the following expressions are structurally ambiguous and in what way?

Answer:

(a) The meaning of this sentence can be interpreted as "for small boys and (all) girls" or "for small boys and (small) girls."

b) "The parents of the bride and (the) groom" - as if only the bride's parents were present

"The parents of the bride and (the parents of the) groom"

d) The history teacher could be from England, or the teacher could teach English history

e) "Flying planes" can be interpreted as planes that are flying, or one's occupation

f) The students either complained to everyone whom they could not understand, or they told everyone about their problem that they could not understand.

Explanation:

Let us first define what structural ambiguity is. Structural (also known as syntactic) ambiguity is a situation in which there are multiple possible interpretations of a single piece of language (it can be a phrase, sentence, clause, etc.). The ambiguity occurs due to the way in which words and phrases are organized.  In this case, all sentences except sentence c) are structurally ambiguous.

Lexical ambiguity, on the other hand, is when a single word can be interpreted in different ways. This is seen in sentence c), where we have different meanings for "legs" and "foot."
