<u>Answer:</u>

<em>The motivation of the main character</em>

<u>Explanation:</u>

The <u>motivation</u> of the main <u>character </u>(or characters) focuses on the reasons behind their decisions, their actions, their psychologies, as well as their goals and needs, and through these particular features, the <u>theme</u> of a story is slowly revealed and understood by the reader.

Which sentence from Washington Irving's short story "The Devil and Tom Walker" is an example of indirect characterization?
Stella [2.4K]
I would say that the sentence which is an example of indirect characterization is the following one:
<span>"Tom's wife was a tall termagant, fierce of temper, loud of tongue, and strong of arm."
</span>The reason why I chose this sentence is because of the word <em>termagant, </em>meaning a violent, overbearing, turbulent, brawling, quarrelsome woman.

Do parents have different rules, standards or hopes for their sons than for their daughters? Why or why not, give an example.
sp2606 [1]

Answer:

Yes, they do! Most parents are more concerned about their son's education than for their daughter's. Whilst parents may not intend to treat sons and daughters differently, research shows that they do. Sons appear to get preferential treatment in that they receive more helpful praise, more time is invested in them, and their abilities are often thought of in higher regard. They also provide better nutrition and medical care for boys than girls, and indulge in a host of other practices that discriminate against girls. Even in this day and age, families openly celebrate the birth of a son, while the birth of a daughter is not always greeted in the same manner.
