Her selfless love for Jim and her wish to buy a Christmas present for Jim, because she was poor and the only thing she had to sell so she could buy him a present was her hair. So even though she loved her hair, she sold it to buy him the thing for his watch (I think) because she loved him even more than her hair.

Answer: her wish to buy a Christmas present for Jim.

Explanation: In O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi", despite loving her long hair, Della cuts it and sell it. What motivated her to take this step is her wish to buy a Christmas present for Jim. Della is proud of her hair that reaches below her knee. It is like an ornament for her. It's Christmas Eve, and in order to buy a present for Jim, Della sells her hair. With the money she gets, she buys a golden chain for his watch.

Dear Daniel,

It feels good to write you again. How are you doing? I hope your studies are going on well, and you are coping with the winter there in America. I am so excited about the new house that Papa just built and I can't wait to share the interesting details with you.

Last month, the duplex which has been an ongoing project was completed by our father. We moved in early this month it has really been fun living here. The house is made up of seven bedrooms with five upstairs and the remaining two downstairs. One of the two rooms downstairs is meant for the visitors while the other is for the domestic staff. I have one room upstairs and the room adjacent to mine was reserved for you. Papa and Mama have two rooms to themselves while Jessica stays in the one close to the main hall.

This house is very magnificent! The floor is fitted with white tiles, the ceiling has a beautiful POP while the paintings are beautifully and artistically done. We are now the talk of the town! Our new neighbors cannot help admiring our house and we have had a number of them coming in to have a better view. I love the new house and I believe you will love it too.

I am so proud of our dad! I can't wait for you to come back and tour the house. I just wanted to share the tip of the iceberg with you. More details will be shared in the next letter. Till then.

Love,

Betty.
