The Harappan civilization is the last of the Neolithic Civilizations. They were the main founders of iron and helped create the iron age, which becomes important in the time that follows. They were located along the indus river and were considered one of the biggest accomplishments of the Indus Valley civilization.

Clarence Gideon had been charged with a burglary in Florida, and the judge said he could not appoint an attorney for Mr. Gideon because the crime of which he was accused was not a capital offense. Gideon claimed he was entitled to be represented by counsel, but the judge did not agree. Gideon was convicted and went to state prison. From there, he appealed to the US Supreme Court in a suit against the Secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections. (By the time the case came before the Supreme Court, that was Louie L. Wainwright, thus "Gideon v. Wainwright.")
The Supreme Court agreed with Mr. Gideon's claim, and since then, all persons, whether in state or federal court, are entitled to the right to counsel and an attorney is appointed if they cannot afford to hire their own.
In Virginia in the 1600s, Anthony Johnson secured his freedom from indentured servitude, acquired land, and became a respected member of his community. Elizabeth Key successfully appealed to the colony’s legal system to set her free after she had been wrongfully enslaved. By the 1700s, the laws and customs of Virginia had begun to distinguish black people from white people, making it impossible for most Virginians of African descent to do what Johnson and Key had done.
The government outlawed slavery in 1981 and made it a crime in 2007. Estimates of the percentage of slaves vary from 10% to 20% of Mauritanian population.
