Based on what you learned in this lesson, why do you think civil rights leaders such as John Lewis thought it was essential for

African Americans to gain the right to vote? Why do you think they thought it would help their cause?

John Lewis and other civil rights activists constantly fought for the right to vote for African-Americans. This is because the right to vote allows citizens to pick representatives. These representatives are then in charge of making laws for the American public. So, if a person can vote, they have the chance to influence the members of the government.

This right to vote would allow African-Americans to elect individuals with similar views. Along with this, they would be able to vote in someone who would help ensure their equal treatment in American society.
