Prior to 1854 this country was divided into two great political parties, known as the Whig and Democratic parties. Both were national and patriotic, advocating principles that were universal in their application. An old line Whig could proclaim his principles in Louisiana and Massachusetts alike.

The role of women during the colonial period was very restricted. The dominant idea was that they were inferior to men and had to obey their authority. Nothing much, besides the religious life and the household duties, were left to women. As expected, colonial girls followed their mothers duties. They learned responsibilities as housekeeping, food preservation, knitting and often help their mothers create household goods like clothing, candles, and soap that could be traded, letter B.
