Dr. Wheeler entered the room and spoke words of advice regarding active verbs. The rebellious class decided that the final paper of the semester would be written entirely in passive voice. The distraught Wheeler made remarks; the students made protests. One student got out of his seat. He stood upon his desk and made a vow that he would never write another active sentence. Wheeler challenged him to a duel. He shed blood. He kicked butts. The students lost lives. People heard the student's shrieks. Concerned people ran down the halls of Henderson. They entered the room and saw carnage. They found Mr. Wheeler standing over the bodies and he spoke the words: "They made mistakes."
Active voice is when the subject of the sentence is doing the verb. Passive voice is when the action verb is done to something, but the subject is not actually capable of doing the action.
The reason we use monsters in literature then? The role they play? There is no singular one. But I personally believe that we use monsters to take everything we dislike about ourselves as humans, and also all of those animalistic instincts we suppress, and put them into one form. We lock those beings in a cupboard or shove them under our beds so that we never have to look at them. And we take them out when we want to create a story - when we want to speculate from far away and see what happens. In that regard, every piece of artwork ever developed starring a monster and a hero is a constructed, thoroughly planned social experiment.
