The battle of Saratoga was a turning point in the American Revolution simply because, with their defeat of the British, the colonists showed that they were willing to fight for their freedom, and because of this, they won the support of European allies, like France and Spain. France later proved to be essential at the Battle of Yorktown because it was the French fleet that blocked in Cornwallis' troops, preventing him from escape, which of course caused him to surrender, ending the Revolution.

When Fidel Castro was elected Prime Minister of Cuba and took power in 1959, Castro announced that he - and his administration - were communists and that they welcomed support and aid from the communist Soviet Union.
