The child in me who had learned to survive in water was crushed to find that my ancestors had not necessarily shared this skill. All that existed for me was my grandmother, rising from the surf like a Dahomean queen, shaking her head free of her torturous rubber cap, beaming down at me when I finally took the first strokes of my own.
