I can already tell you that you can eliminate the first two answers. Out with the old and in with the new and love can overcome all obstacles. I have not read the book, but I read a briefly summary of it online. After all it is about life and struggles. Life, consciousness, existence and finding hope. That's how I know it's D. "Land by oceans past" - You would not be able to tell the land if there were no oceans
"Peace by its battles told" - How would we have a definition for peace without battles?
It shows that there are more sources for the reader to read, and it also is strong supporting evidence for the main idea.
A direct quote should NEVER be long-winded and lengthy. You want to try to get the point across in a carefully selected short excerpt, not copy a large portion of someone else's work and insert it into your paper with a little bit of your own writing.
