The form ax2 + bx + c = 0 is called standard form of a quadratic equation. Before solving a quadratic equation using the Quadratic Formula, it's vital that you be sure the equation is in this form. If you don't, you might use the wrong values for a, b, or c, and then the formula will give incorrect solutions.

ExampleProblemRewrite the equation 3x + 2x2 + 4 = 5 in standard form and identify a, b, and c. 3x + 2x2 + 4 = 53x + 2x2 + 4 – 5 = 5 – 5First be sure that the right side of the equation is 0. In this case, all you need to do is subtract 5 from both sides. 3x + 2x2 – 1 = 02x2 + 3x – 1 = 0Simplify, and write the terms with the exponent on the variable in descending order. 2x2+3x–1=0↓ ↓ ↓ ax2 bx c a = 2, b = 3, c = −1 Now that the equation is in standard form, you can read the values of a, b, and c from the coefficients and constant. Note that since the constant 1 is subtracted, c must be negative.Answer2x2 + 3x – 1 = 0; a = 2, b = 3, c = −1

ExampleProblemRewrite the equation 2(x + 3)2 – 5x = 6 in standard form and identify a, b, and c. 2(x + 3)2 – 5x = 62(x + 3)2 – 5x – 6 = 6 – 6First be sure that the right side of the equation is 0. 2(x2 + 6x + 9) – 5x – 6 = 02x2 + 12x + 18 – 5x – 6 = 02x2 + 12x – 5x + 18 – 6 = 02x2 + 7x + 12 = 0Expand the squared binomial, then simplify by combining like terms. Be sure to write the terms with the exponent on the variable in descending order. 2x2+7x+12=0↓ ↓ ↓ a b c a = 2, b = 7, c = 12 Now that the equation is in standard form, you can read the values of a, b, and c from the coefficients and constant.Answer2x2 + 7x + 12 = 0; a = 2, b = 7, c = 12

Identify the values of a, b, and c in the standard form of the equation 3x + x2 = 6. A) a = 3, b = 1, c = 6B) a = 1, b = 3, c = 6C) a = 1, b = 3, c = −6D) a = 3, b = 1, c = −6 Show/Hide Answer

Find the distance of the following points from the x axis: P(3,0) , Q(0,-3) , R(12,-4) , S(-4,-3)
OverLord2011 [107]

Answer:

Distance of point P(3,0) from x axis is zero as this point lies on x axis.

distance of point Q is 3.

Distance of point R is 4.

Distance of point S is 3.

Step-by-step explanation:

Point P already lies on x axis as its y coordinate is zero so its distance from x axis is zero

distance of points Q , R and S is the absolute value of their y coordinates that is 3 , 4 and 3 respectively.

Please help on these two
jeyben [28]

Answer:

For your first problem you want to see what all the sides would equal

You would have to combine them all into one big equation

5x-7+3x+1+4x=30 (now you want to combine like terms)

12x-7+1=30 (combined the x's together)

12x-6=30 (added -7 and 1)

12x=36 (added 6 to each side)

x=3 (divided 12 to each side)

Now you wanna plug 4 in for x for each side to find out the largest to smallest

AB=5(3)-7= 8

BC=3(3)+1= 10

AC=4(3)= 12

So in order from smallest to largest would be angle C, B, A because

Angle C is the smallest angle because the sides AC and BC are the longest so they form the smallest angle

Then it would be angle A being the largest because the smallest sides in length AB and BC make up the biggest angle

The next problem would be that in order for it to have to be a triangle the two smallest sides needs to add up higher than the third side so

11, 11, 24, 11+11=22, which is less than 24 so not this one

18,12,9, 9+12=21 which is greater that 18 so this one would be a triangle

9,10,19, 9+10=19 which 19 isn't greater than 19 so this one is not a triangle

4,7,23, 4+7=11 which is less than 23, so this one is also not a triangle

So your answer would be 18cm,12cm,9cm
