Lake effect snow is the result.

Lake effect snow is a heavy and localized snowfall that is traceable to the great lakes. During the winter season, this type of  snow results when cold air moves over lake waters that are warm.

Given that the temperature of the lakes are more than that of the cold air that came in contact with the lake, it would cause moisture to go up.

This moisture and high temperature is what combines together for there to be snow.
