Original 13 United States (colonies)

Acquired in 1783, previously owned by Britain, 13 colonies received independence and land to the Miss. River in the Treaty of Paris of Revolutionary War

Louisiana Purchase

Acquired in 1803, previously owned by France, US bought this land to guaranteed access to the Miss. River

Adams-Onis Treaty

Acquired in 1819, previously owned by Spain, US received Florida in Adams-Onis Treaty, because US was complaining of Spain not controlling Indian attacks

Texas Annexation

Acquired in 1845, previously an independent republic, the US annexed the Lone Star Republic despite objections of Mexico (the territory's former owner)

Oregon Territory

Acquired in 1846, previously owned by Britain, after the tariff concessions to Britain, to US arranged a compromise with Britain to divide it at the 49th parallel

Mexican Cession

Acquired in 1848, previously owned by Mexico, US received this land in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo after American victory in the Mexican War
