Is Dorian Gray a critique or endorsement on the aesthetic hedonism movement?

English

Even though the author of Dorian Gray preached aestheticism as the ultimate goal of arts, his work does not converge to that conclusion.

Oscar Wilde, along with other artists belonging to the movement, claimed to believe art is done for art's sake. That, behind books, pictures and music, there shouldn't be a deeper meaning, a lesson to be taught and learned, any political positioning to defend or attack. Art was, thus, only supposed to be beautiful.

However, Wilde's character Dorian finds himself sinking in life for his lack of moral. Concerned only about his own youth and beauty, Dorian is incapable of loving and connecting to another human being. Consequently, everyone around him suffers and he becomes a dark and lonely soul, whose sins and real age are apparent in a picture of him painted by a friend.

The picture of Dorian Gray is an endorsement of the aesthetic hedonism movement. Because Aestheticism represents the commitment to any type of moral values as long as it represents art and aesthetics. Basically, the work of The picture of Dorian Gray uses Hedonism with aesthetic purposes. Now, Hedonism's priority is joy above anything else, the movement proposes to reach maximal pleasure to enjoy life. In this case, Aestheticism is used with Hedonism, using a twisted sense of moral values in order to achieve its aesthetic purpose.

Why did oral storytelling traditions favor strong meter and alliteration?
tatuchka [14]
Because scops (oral storytellers) were telling their stories orally and not from a written account, they needed something that would allow them to easily remember those stories. This why you notice that tales or epics that were first told orally have a certain cadence that makes it easier to follow. This allows the storyteller to remember and it also allows the reader to follow along in a better way.

As an interesting side note, these story tellers would also sometimes put the stories to music as that was another way to tell the stories. They would start as ballads and the storyteller would play a tune while they sang the stories.

Match the literary movement or subgenre with the literature.
astraxan [27]

Answer:

The literary movement or sub-genre that matches with the literature - The sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" is Early American and Colonial Literature. The right answer is Option A.

Explanation:

Sermons were written in plain style rather than ornate d religious poetry. They focused on daily life, moral attitudes and political unrest. The literature was instructive as it reinforced the authority of the Bible and the Church in it. Fate was determined by God and all people are sinful and must be saved by the Christ - were the themes of this literary period. Puritanism started as an insult of traditional Anglicans to those who wished to "purify" the Church of England. Jonathan Edwards’s "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" had been written during this phase.

The motive of delivering this sermon is to warn the congregation particularly and presumably, the nation as a whole that they must repent of their sinful ways. They must turn to God for forgiveness to escape death by hellfire before it's too late. Edwards is saying that this is the opportunity to embrace and accept Jesus Christ, his teachings and his sacrifice as reparation for sins. The choice must be made by those people who God is calling, through Jesus Christ, to accept the call to repentance and a new life or reject it.
