Assuming you are talking about the civil war..the norths plan was called the anaconda plan because they were going to wrap around the south and strangle it....like a snake! They were going to cut the confederacy in half...capture the capital (Richmond) and blockade all imports and exports of the south.
The souths plan was pure defensive strategy...which obviously failed.
