Avocados grow on trees and originate in South Central Mexico. They had a bumpy dark green skin and one large seed in the middle, they are somewhat pear shaped.

Kiwis are small, fit in the palm of your hand, light green on the inside with many small black seeds, and have a fuzzy brown skin on the outside. Kiwis originated in China and grow on vines.

In "Hope, Despair and Memory," the author compares this past to the future when he discusses his experience in a concentration camp in Germany during World War II. He uses literary technique by using details in his memory about the past in order to compare them to events happening in present time today.
