Democracy is a purely Western idea that was born in ancient Greece. However, it is not a political idea that held firm roots until the 18th century when in Europe, different bourgeois movements and revolutions, made it a common ideal between nations (it should be noted that, even then, democracies in today´s Western world are not a pure breed, since they usually entail a form of representative democracy, parliamentary or otherwise). Having said that, during and after the Cold War, many countries around the world, but especially in Asia (most notably, Russia and its satellite states, after the fall of the Soviet Union), have adopted one form or another of representative democracy, always coupled with a purely capitalistic economic system.
