Just like most of Africa, Nigeria was at some point colonized by Europeans. Nigeria was invaded by the British in 1851, and formally annexed to the empire in 1861. This domination continued until 1960. British rule brought many negative consequences to Nigerian culture and traditions. One of this was the fact that traditional gender roles were reinforced by the newly adopted European values.
