Because the Aztec's were wealthy with gold, Spaniards believed every tale about riches and spent a great deal of time searching for gold in the area.

Spanish Conquistador Hernan Cortes lead an expedition in 1521, which helped to conquer the Aztec Empire by killing thousands and destroying civilization. Cortes founded Mexico City on the ruins of Tenochtitlan and claimed it for Spain. By destroying the ancient civilization, Cortes introduced the Spanish language to an area which early dominated with a variety of indigenous languages.

Sunni's do not believe that this should be an inherited position. The two communities have lived relatively peacefully until recent years where tension has risen.
