What were many explorers looking for when they arrived in North America? (Besides gold)

They were looking for new land and territory to conquer. Explores like Christopher Columbus initially set out to sea in order to search for a shorter route to Asia for spices. Ultimately the explores that followed him to North America searched to set up new colonies in order to start a new life. The final reason was to share their religion. Many of the explorers were Christian and their mindset was to spread what they believed in, to the natives in America.
