D. Second Great Awakening

Explanation:

  • The anti-slavery movement boomed during the 1830s and 1840s, at a time when northern society was undergoing a general transformation that required comprehensive social and political change.
  • The reform movement was focused on a set of principles that should change the way we live, work habits, and allow us to adapt to the new - capitalist mode of production. Their views also had a religious background in the Second Great Awakening legacy, a period of religious revival that emphasized the need for change in every person.
  • Therefore, the principles of the movement of change in the North were echoed by the Yankee Protestantism of the Great Awakening. Including other conflicting ideologies, the changes in the second half of the first part of the nineteenth century had the focus of changing the human person by adopting the principles of a sense of discipline, order and restraint. Many of the proponents of change were mindful of liberation and social mobility (the ability to advance, the right to own and disband with their own workforce), which they held to be the founding principles of American democracy.
