Sedimentary rocks are widespread. They include the Old Red Sandstones from the Devonian period. These are common in the 'ridge and valley' landscape that runs across much of south-west Ireland. Limestone also covers much of the country most notably in the midlands and in areas such as the Burren in Co.:)
Hunga Tonga volcano eruption forms new S Pacific island. A new island has been formed in the South Pacific after the eruption of an underwater volcano in Tonga. Images have emerged of the island's surface, 45km (28 miles) north-west of Tonga's capital, Nuku'alofa.
Plains<span> occur as lowlands along the bottoms of </span>valleys<span> or on the doorsteps of mountains, as coastal </span>plains<span>, and as plateaus or uplands. In a </span>valley<span>, a </span>plain<span> is enclosed on two sides but in other cases a </span>plain<span> may be delineated by a complete or partial ring of hills, by mountains or cliffs.</span>
