What is the value of y in the following system?
Y= 3x-5
6x + 3y= 15
nalin [4]
X = 2
y = 1

You can get this by replacing the y in the second equation with the 3x - 5 from the first. Then solve for x. Once you have that value, you can solve for y.

Use the quadratic formula to solve the equation. If necessary, round to the nearest hundredth.
Rzqust [24]

Answer:

a = 6 or 9

Step-by-step explanation:

The "a", "b", and "c" of the quadratic formula are the coefficients of a², a, and the constant term in the given equation:

... a = 2, b = -30, c = 108

Then the quadratic formula tells you the solutions are ...

... (-b ± √(b² -4ac))/(2a)

... = (-(-30) ± √((-30)² -4(2)(108)))/(2(2))

... = (30 ± √(900 -864))/4

... = (30 ± √36)/4

... = (30 ± 6)/4 = {24, 36}/4

... = {6, 9}

_____

The a variable should not be confused with the "a" that is used to name the coefficient of the square of the variable in the quadratic formula. If it is too confusing, rewrite one or the other. For example, you could write ...

... The solution to pa² +qa +r = 0 is ... a = (-q ± √(q²-4pr))/(2p)

where p=2, q=-30, r=108 in the given equation.

The second of two numbers is 8 less than twice the first number, what are the two numbers?
Mashutka [201]
So the two numbers can be represented as x and y

so x is first and y is second

y=2(x)-8

so y=2x-8

IF THEY ARE CONSECUTIVE
If they are consecutive numbers then
x+1=y
subtitute
x+1=2x-8
subtract x from both sides
1=x-8
add 8 to both sides and get
9=x
put it into the equation and get
y=2(9)-8
y=18-8
y=10
so x=9
y=10
IF X AND Y ARE CONSECUTIVE INTEGERS (1,2,3,4 not 2.3 or 1,3,5,8)

Bob and will toss two coins. if both coins come up heads, bob pays will $6. will pays bob $2 otherwise. what is the expected val
Helga [31]
Each coin has a head and a tail, therefore when you toss two coins, you have 4 possible outcomes. You have two heads in only one of these outcomes, while the other three have at least one tail.

The expected value of the game is the price paid/gained times the probability of loss/victory:

E = (1 / 4) · (-6) + (3 / 4) · (2)
 = -3 / 2 + 3 / 2
 = 0

Bob expects to tie with Will.
