Esta zona ocupa la parte baja de la región fisiográfica de la Cadena Costera; al norte limita con las zonas de café, y al sur con varias zonas agrícolas. Esta zona, al igual que la región fisiográfica, no constituye una unidad física sino que se encuentra interrumpida en su desarrollo longitudinal por las prolongaciones de la zona agrícola de la Llanura Costera, o por la superposición de la Cordillera Central. De acuerdo con esta alternancia, la zona forestal de la Cadena Costera se puede subdividir en las siguientes subzonas; a) Ahuachapán; b) Sonsonate - La Libertad - La Paz; c) San Vicente, y d) San Miguel - La Uniór - Las condiciones geológicas y geomorfológicas de suelos, así como las hidrológicas, de uso de la tierra, de capacidad productiva y estructura agraria son bastante semejantes y condicionan su uso a la actividad forestal en mayor proporción.

La zona está formada por terrenos con topografía que varía de ondulada a alomada, y por lo general ocupan posiciones entre 100 y 500 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Arriba de los 500 metros se define la zona cafetalera.

La subzona de Ahuachapán comprende parte de los municipios de Tacuba, San Francisco Menéndez, Jujutla, Guaymango y San Pedro Puxtla, del departamento de Ahuachapán, y los municipios de Santo Domingo Guzmán, Santa Catalina Masahuat y San Antonio del Monte, del departamento de Sonsonate. La subzona de Sonsonate - La Libertad - La Paz comprende parte de los municipios de Cuisnahuat y Ishuatán, del departamento de Sonsonate; Teotepeque, Jicalapa, Chiltiupán, Tomanique, Comasagua, Nueva San Salvador, Zaragoza, San José Villanueva, Huizucar y La Libertad, del departamento de La Libertad; Rosario de Mora, Panchimalco y Santo Tomás, del departamento de San Salvador; Olocuilta,<u> Cuyutitá</u>n, San Juan Talpa, Tapalhuaca, San Francisco Chinameca, San Antonio Masahuat, Rosario de la Paz, San Pedro Nonualco y Santiago Nonualco, del departamento de La Paz.
