When he uses the pronoun <em>them</em>, he talks about women.

He says <em>"Pygmalion had seen them, spending their lives in wickedness, and, offended by the failings that nature gave the female heart, he lived as a bachelor, without a wife or partner for his bed".</em>

And that is why he decided to create his own partner, he carved a sculpture and he fell in love with it.
