We know this is the answer due to what history has shown us. to conquer in the first place, you need a strong military force and to keep it, the people you are ruling have to agree.

An aristocracy would need to be bought out or give consent since no one man can dominate others without help from those who have a monopoly on wealth and power, but at some point others with such power/wealth would have to recognize the legitimacy of the rule of one of their number for it to work.
