Select the correct answer. What opinion about Russian society does Leo Tolstoy express in this excerpt from The Death of Ivan Il

yich? The awful, terrible act of his dying was, he could see, reduced by those about him to the level of a casual, unpleasant, and almost indecorous incident (as if someone entered a drawing room defusing an unpleasant odour) and this was done by that very decorum which he had served all his life long. He saw that no one felt for him, because no one even wished to grasp his position. Only Gerasim recognized it and pitied him. And so Ivan Ilyich felt at ease only with him. He felt comforted when Gerasim supported his legs (sometimes all night long) and refused to go to bed, saying: "Don't you worry, Ivan Ilyich. I'll get sleep enough later on," or when he suddenly became familiar and exclaimed: "If you weren't sick it would be another matter, but as it is, why should I grudge a little trouble?" Gerasim alone did not lie; everything showed that he alone understood the facts of the case and did not consider it necessary to disguise them, but simply felt sorry for his emaciated and enfeebled master. Once when Ivan Ilyich was sending him away he even said straight out: "We shall all of us die, so why should I grudge a little trouble?"—expressing the fact that he did not think his work burdensome, because he was doing it for a dying man and hoped someone would do the same for him when his time came. A. The peasant class in nineteenth-century Russia was full of honest and compassionate people. B. Educated professionals gained influence in Russian society in the nineteenth century. C. In the nineteenth century, middle-class Russians were rich and well-educated. D. Peasants more readily accepted unpleasant facts of life, while the middle class tried to deny them.

Answer:

D

Explanation:

Due to the unfavourable conditions peasants are exposed to, they easily grasp the harsh realities of life such as death. Also, in their community they learned to care for one another because they have one another's back, unlike the bourgeoisie/ educated elites who only care about themselves and keeping to their social levels. For such people around Ivan, his illness and impending death has become bothersome, and he realized the superficiality of that society.

What is gladwell’s purpose in the last part of the chapter 9? How does he achieve this purpose?
Fed [463]

Answer:

Gladwell's purpose is to pinpoint that by sacrifice, children should have equal opportunity to achieve success.

Explanation:

Gladwell pointed out that summer vacation is one of the major challenge to education in American. Stating categorically that summer break unconsciously segregate higher income children from lover income children. Because during  summer vacation, children who cannot afford the demands are mostly unproductive. Thus, it a period of a wasted time for them.

He was able to achieve his purpose by stressing that success requires giving children equal opportunity, and this is possible by sacrifice, giving those who do not have the opportunity a chance.

Write a movie review about a movie you saw .
Free_Kalibri [48]

It’s a classic movie that everyone loves. It was the highlight of my childhood. Watching it again brought back the excitement of a magical world that I always wish existed. I watched Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

It seemed logical at the time not to start from the first of the series – that would be a moment where I question my logic, however it was still as enjoyable as the first. I instantly remembered why this one out of the seven was specifically my favourite. I loved the amount of activities going on in the movie; it also progressed into this magical world we knew little about, so we find out more than we previously may not have even thought about… Unless you read the books like I did. That moment of excitement to actually be able to visualise the Goblet of Fire is something that can only be described by true Harry Potter fans.

I realised whilst watching the movie that it never occurred to me that there would be other magic schools other than Hogwarts. The moment of awe was something I enjoy experiencing repetitively each time I come across the Harry Potter series.

The movie starts with classic reunion of Harry, Hermione and the comedian of the series, Ron. However unlike the others it progresses their relationship as they have clearly grown. It was enjoyable to watch how their relationships shook when other characters were added into the equation. When the plot moved on from the bright and light toned scenes I then questioned how I managed to watch the scenes with the entrance of Voldermort. I wonder how I managed to watch the first Harry Potter movie without being freaked out as a child. Nevertheless it’s a movie that I wouldn’t mind re-watching countless times
