Another reason why could be because he thinks the kids want attention, and he could think that the kids just want to live somewhere else. Also, Mr. Poe thinks that no one would do all of that just for a fortune. Mr. Poe is really du mb and he needs to open his eyes, and actually try to investigate, and he needs to think better too.
