In 1685, Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, established a settlement in Texas due to a geographical error.  His exploration party they had found the spot where the Mississippi River connected with the ocean.  In reality, La Salle was nowhere near the Mississippi and had actually come across Garcitas Creek (in Texas) that connected to the Gulf of Mexico instead. This settlement is commonly referred to as Fort St. Louis.
