Lord Baltimore, who had received a management concession for the territory of the province in 1632, named the area presumably after Queen Henrietta Maria, the wife of Charles I.

On March 25, 1634, the first settlers arrived in the area. Maryland was the only Catholic among the strictly Protestant British colonies in North America. The first Catholic diocese and the first catholic cathedral of the United States were established there. The Maryland Toleration Act was one of the first laws expressly tolerating other Christian denominations, and is therefore considered a forerunner of the First Amendment.
