What are the similarities and differences in acting for film and theatre productions?

In theatre, the acting is live. You can't retake scenes if you mess up. Each performance is a little different, and can only be watched once (unless recorded.) With film, you have virtually endless tries to get a scene right. A film can be watched as many times as a person pleases, if they have access to the film in some way.
