how high or low one is based of off their friends.  Its kind of like a low high and middle class(economics) but for social standings.  This is commonly used in countries with strong traditions.  When someone says they will not touch those lower than them it means they will not interact with someone who is socially lower than them. Its how popular or unpopular someone is
