In the book, the first descriptions of him were "fierce-looking" boar "with a reputation for getting his own way." as well. Napoleon was also a metaphor for Joseph Stalin, so the animals on Animal Farm see Napoleon the same way people saw Stalin. For example, both Stalin and Napoleon surrounded themselves with guards, they were cruel, and wanted power and were willing to use any means necessary to get it.
